Recommendations regarding Architectural Photography

  • When exteriors of a building are being shot, the photographer should imagine that the building is the center of a huge circle. Accordingly, the photography should walk along the circumference of this imaginary circle and when he/she detects an appealing angle, should take a shot
  • It is advisable to underexpose rather than overexpose. So, the photographer must set light measurements from the darkest scene and adjust the exposure from this scene
  • The photographer must maintain the cleanliness of the sensor
  • The camera level must be adjusted to below the eye level of an average human being. If the camera level is set around 4.5 feet, the lower angle takes the images of the snapshot category
  • In order to acquire the widest shot, the photographer must stand back and then hold the camera to his/her eye and further back up. Then, he/she must set the tripod and compose the image
  • It is advised to take benefit of the wide angle. If a 12 mm lens is used, it is feasible to depict large spaces precisely. Good photos can be taken of even the smallest powder rooms
  • If long shutter times and wide apertures are used, this offers warmth to the images

Photography of Buildings

  • The surroundings of the building must not comprise of distracting elements. So, the background must not consist of incomplete buildings or unrelated objects
  • A building must be represented in its real proportion. A photographer must use a view camera for adjustment of the viewpoint
  • It is important to include the base, structure and top in the photo. If the top is absent, the picture looks chopped. If the base is absent, then this gives the sensation of a floating object
  • In order to determine the optimum moment for the shot, the photographer must study how the position of the Sun is affecting the structure. Moreover, how the building looks from different angles during varying Sun positions
  • The characteristics of a building can be captured only when there is adequate light. So, the photographer must prevent taking a shot on cloudy days
  • Side lighting is beneficial for good images. This lighting pleasantly reveals the materials and shapes of a building
