Black and White Photography
If the history of photography is studied, it can be easily concluded that for a major period, the photographer had a single choice and this was Black and White Photography. After the arrival of color photography, the black and white photos were less costly and of better quality compared to color photos. However, the quality of color photographs gradually increased and the popularity of black and white photos declined.
Presently, there is a trend of revival of black and white photos. The reason is explained below.
Why to return to Black and White Photography?
- This genre comprises of an air of mystery, timelessness, class and romance. Both Gothic and Wedding photography have accepted that this genre results in timeless photos
- The presence of color can actually lead away from the desired photographic effect. In these photos, the delicate effects of lighting and texture stand out. These effects are lost in color images
- It is possible to create a somber and stark tone for the photos. Due to this feature, black and white photography is used in photojournalism
- The modern techniques have now developed several methods for black and white photos as follows
- Digital cameras have settings for black and white photos. If this does not result in good quality photos, then take the help of software as hinted in the next point
- The photo can be taken using the normal color settings. The photo is transferred to the computer and converted to black and white using computer software. This software can also alter the brightness and contrast of the photo resulting in a better quality
Features of Black and White Photography
- The presence of colors can be used to date a photo to a particular generation. Black and white photos get around this problem by offering a nostalgic and timeless feel. It is recommended that to achieve a timeless feel, the photographer must avoid objects like telephone poles, posters, cars etc that date a photo
- Sometimes the photographer aims to capture the texture of a thing. For example, the wrinkles and lines of an old individual's face or a rock face or a tree trunk. In such cases, the texture of a particular object can be precisely depicted only in black and white photos and not in color images
- Let us consider a loving couple hugging each other and the colors of their clothing clash. This color photo looks awful as the colors on the image do not work together. On the contrary, if black and white photo is taken in such cases, it becomes possible to evade colors that divert the viewer's eye
