When the photographer is given a sum of money for his/her images instead of works of art, it is called as Commercial Photography. It has been observed that newspapers, magazines, advertising agencies and companies who have websites disburse an amount for a photograph.

- Still Life Photography: This is used to showcase inanimate objects. These may be man-made or natural
- Crime Scene Photography: Usually, an infrared or black and white camera is put into use. Scenes of murders and robberies belong to this category
- Glamour and Fashion Photography: Both these are related to models. If the model is emphasized, it is called as Glamour Photography. If the product or clothes are stressed upon, it is called as Fashion Photography. In the Glamour variety, models may be naked. The photos in Glamour photography are famous in men's magazines and advertising

When a budding photographer submits the portfolio, he/she must keep it in mind to send out the following messages.
- The photographer is willing to do all that is essential to make life easy for the client
- The photographer is responsive and professional
- The photographer proactively recognizes the requirements of the client
Relevancy of work
Let us assume that a client is hiring somebody for fashion work. So, if a photographer submits a portfolio that has some very impressive nature photos, the client won't be impressed. The conclusion is that the portfolio must be directly relevant to the demands of the client. Thus, the photographer must be prepared with a portfolio of each genre that he/she has past experience in.
Adequate written information
The written information must convey all the data that is essential and must not comprise of any extraneous points. This would result in the client having more time for your images. Basically, the client is only interested in the end result. So, do not mention equipment choices or shutter speed. However, each shot must have a unique title and a brief description.
