Digital Photography

Till recent past, photographic films were used to create images. Photographic processing was used to make the images visible.

Nowadays, digital technology is used to create images. This eliminates the need of chemical processing and digital photographs can be archived, transmitted, manipulated, stored, printed and displayed using computer and digital techniques. This is called as Digital Photography.

Purchasing a camera for Digital Photography

One must keep the following things in mind while purchasing a digital camera.

User Controls

The controls to set exposure, flash, macro mode and resolution must be within easy reach. It is advisable that the buyer handles these controls in the store itself and ascertains that he/she is comfortable with them.

Exposure Control

The photographer must be able to control exposure settings like lens opening and shutter speed. There are some cheap digital cameras that permit to shoot photos in an automatic mode. In order to take a picture, all that is necessary is to press the shutter release. However, advanced users desire to twist the shutter speed and aperture. If the buyer aims to pursue photography, then the camera must have a good exposure control

Zoom Lens

Let us understand the difference between digital zoom and optical zoom. The former digitally averages and enlarges the image within the microchip of the camera. This results in poor picture quality. The latter physically moves the lens to zoom on an object. It is advisable to procure minimum 3X optical zoom.

Number of Megapixels

This number varies from 2 to 8 megapixels. If the buyer intends to take small snapshots that can be sent by email or can be posted on the web, 2 megapixels are recommended. If the intention is of having large print outs for the gorgeous photographs, then 5 or more megapixels are essential.

Battery Life

It can be simply stated that one should ensure to buy a camera that has good battery life. The past observations are such that some cheap cameras have good battery life while costly cameras don't. If one desires to have good photos, the camera must be powered for extended duration.

Tips for Digital Photography

Memory Capacity

  • Have minimum 512 MB or 1 GB card for 5 or more megapixel camera
  • Have minimum 256 MB card for 4 megapixel camera
  • Have minimum 128 MB card for 3 megapixel camera
  • Have minimum 64 MB card for 2 megapixel camera

    ISO setting

  • If the object is still, employ a low ISO setting. This results in a longer shutter speed and a cleaner photo
  • If the object is moving, employ a high ISO setting. This causes a faster shutter speed and less light

    Tripod

All budding photographers are advised to purchase and carry a simple compact tripod as part of the arsenal. This is very handy while taking shots under low-light conditions or capturing fast moving objects

    • A fundamental rule is to hold the camera level. The photographer must look for horizontal lines and utilize them as a guide. For example, during a sunset photo is to make use of the horizon
    • While taking close ups of objects like insects or flowers, one should use the macro mode
    • Control of the flash is very important. While shooting outdoor, it is advisable to turn the flash on, if the subject is in shade. While shooting indoor, the flash may result in harsh glare and unnatural skin color
