Fashion Photography
A variety of photography that is dedicated to display of clothing and other fashion items is termed as Fashion Photography. In course of time, the artistic appeal of this genre was increased by the use of story lines or exotic locations or including impressive models. Sometimes animals or vehicles were also added to have an eye catching impact. Generally, these photos are displayed in fashion magazines or advertisements.
First Step in Fashion Photography
If a photographer desires to pursue this photography, the most vital issue is the portfolio of this photographer. This has even greater importance for novices who lack an established reputation. The editors of magazines demand some promotional material. These editors usually assess the work of people who approach with a direct recommendation of an individual who the editor personally knows.
Several photographers realize that a less expensive method to display a large number of images is a website. They also find that computer editing requires less money than printing and/or retouching.
The sharp and bright photo of 4 X 5 inch transparencies is a good method to present the work. 8 X 10 inch prints of good quality are also acceptable. If the photographer has been published, tear-sheets are a great option.
Second Step in Fashion Photography
When a photographer is submitting his/her work, he/she must have the following points in mind.
- The photographer must make a call to the magazine and find out the name of the person to whom the work should be marked to
- Label all the work along with his/her (the photographer's) name and telephone number
- Should not dispatch the originals but transparencies or working prints
- If the photographer wants his/her work back, he/she must send a self-addressed stamped envelope
Role of Photo Agent
A Photo agent communicates with clients and sells the work of the photographers. They are of use to start-out photographers as these photographers do not have contacts in the industry. An agent is of use to veteran photographers also as these seasoned people are very busy taking care of the business.
The first contact of a photographer with an agent is treated as a job interview by the agent. The agent can offer career advice. They can resell the work in various different markets. In this way, they play the role of a mini publicist.
Photography for a Gallery
The photographer has to dispatch a representative sampling of his/her work to get selected for a gallery. The work must comprise of minimum 1 or 2 knock-out images. As per the standards of the industry, an artist is given half of the retail price of one photo.
