Landscape Photography

Landscape Photography means taking images of a section or portion of scenery as is visible from a single perspective. The subject of the photo is scenery. The photo must be of the land and its aggregate natural features. Generally, animals and people are not included, except when they are relatively small in the photo and have been considered to show scale.

Abstract

  • This is a graphic style
  • The photographer looks at components of scenery as graphic elements

Impressionistic

  • The image is more unreal and less tangible and yet retains the values of landscape pictures
  • The image has elusive or vague features

Representational
  • This is a straightforward style that follows the WYSIWYG rule (what you see is what you get)
  • The images are most natural and realistic
  • Weather, timing and light are critical elements
  • The photographer pays attention to detail and composition
  • The photographer does not try to bend reality and does not add components or props to the scene

Tips for efficient Landscape Photography

  • In order to understand the landscape, scale is very important. This is attained by including an object of known size in the image. For example, animals or people that naturally belong to the scenery are suitable
  • Instead of placing the horizon in the middle of the scene, it is recommended to place it a third way down from the bottom or the top of the frame
  • If the center of interest is placed off-center as per the Rule of Thirds this results in a harmonious composition
  • Each scene must comprise of a center of interest. This is a subject that entices the eye of the viewer to the picture
  • If a foreground object is used, it assists to frame the scene and add a look of three-dimensionality
  • In case of tumbling brooks, waterfalls and waves i.e. where the water is moving, this movement can be captured by employing a slow shutter speed. This results in a blur and the landscape becomes interesting. While using a slow shutter speed, the camera's aperture must be adjusted precisely. In case of many cameras, this is done automatically in Shutter Priority mode

  • This variety of photography is generally frequently horizontal than vertical. This feature offers a chance to shoot a panorama
  • While framing a scene, the rules of composition must be remembered. Specifically, lines are a strong factor in developing an interesting photo
  • When there is low light, it is essential to opt for a high ISO sensitivity setting or a fast film speed that results in good depth of field and proper exposure
