Learn Photography Controls Preset Camera Modes

In some cameras, the settings are preprogrammed. The photographer needs to turn a dial to alter several settings simultaneously. Some of these presets are as follows.

  • Basic
  • Portrait
  • Night Portrait
  • Macro
  • Landscape
  • Action
  • Advanced
  • Manual
  • Shutter Priority
  • Aperture Priority
Aperture

Aperture is identical to the iris in the human eye. It is an adjustable opening in the camera. If the aperture is narrow, less light reaches the film. If it is wide, more light is permitted through the lens to reach the film

Shutter Speed

This determines the duration of time for which the digital sensor or film is exposed to light. As a result, the shutter decides the image that is captured on the film. When the photographer presses the shutter release button, the shutter opens. Depending on the shutter speed, the shutter remains open.

Learn Photography Composition

Should the subject look at the camera?

If the subject looks at the camera and smiles, this obviously results in a nice photo. However, sometimes the following are observed.

  • The subject fails to make a non-overdramatic smile
  • The subject narrows his/her eyes
  • The subject wrinkles his/her forehead
If the above happens, the photographer must request the subject to look away from the camera.

Horizontal versus Vertical

In Vertical photographs, height is given more importance than the width. In Horizontal photographs, width is given more importance than the height. The design of a camera is to take horizontal photographs.

Centering the Subject

This implies that the subject is exactly in the center of the frame. Centering is done with the following motives in mind.

  • Overcoming location difficulties
  • Creating a sense of size and space
  • Drawing attention to the subject
Depth of Field

This refers to the amount of the image beyond and before the focus point that is in focus. This DOF decides if the subject and the background can precisely focused simultaneously. It is determined by 3 factors - subject distance, lens, aperture/F-stop.

Rule of Thirds

The photographer should imagine that the image is made of 9 equal squares. The 4 points of intersection of these lines are the strongest focal points. The lines are 2nd strongest focal points. The subject is placed on one of these lines or points.

Color in Photography

Each photographer must refer the color wheel. This wheel guides which colors mix well with other colors and which colors clash with each other. The feel of the photograph is impacted the color in the compositions.

Light Meter

The Light Meter of the camera is a device that considers all the settings in the camera like film speed, shutter speed and aperture. It also indicates how the combination of these and the available light will impact the sensor or the film. Understanding this tool for measuring light is the first step for understanding photography lighting.
