Nature Photography
The term "Nature Photography" comprises of images of the following.
- Close-ups of natural scenes and textures
- Plants
- Wildlife
- Landscape
Another aspect of this type of photography is that the images lack human beings. The photographer aims at having immaculate and pure nature photos.
Nature Photography of Landscapes
- Usually, a pinhole camera is used. The other substitute is to have a large format camera and tripod
- It is a popular option to use a wide angle lens (24 mm and 35 mm)
- A large number of landscape photographs are presently being taken from compact cameras and digital SLRs (Single Lens Reflex Cameras)
- Mountains and waterfalls are a favorite of photographers. These need a large format camera along with polarizing or neutral density filters
- Some other topics are ambient light, weather and strongly defined landforms
- Those who venture on the beach try to capture it when it is full of sunbathers and parasols
Nature Photography of Wildlife
- Presently, automated cameras and digital cameras are used in this genre
- An impressive wildlife photo demands being at the right place at the right time
- Photographers shoot marine life using underwater cameras, birds using long focal length lenses and insects using macro lenses
- This variety of photography requires the use of a hide/blind for concealment or stalking skills
- The photographer should have some know-how of the demeanor of animals so that he/she can foresee their actions and act accordingly
- Excellent good field craft skills are a pre-requisite for this photography
Photography of Nature related to Underwater images
- This variety of photography is generally performed while scuba diving. However, it can be executed while swimming or snorkeling also
- Some subjects to be photographed are marine mammals, fish, fellow divers, underwater landscapes, submerged caves and shipwrecks
- This genre of photography is a very challenging one
- In order to minimize the horizontal loss of color, the photographer must be very close to the subject. Optimum results can be obtained by using wide angle lenses (as these enable close focus) or macro lenses (as the distance between the subject and the camera is only a few inches)
- The following equipment is recommended
- Single lens reflex cameras
- Compact digital cameras with full exposure controls
- Digital point and shoot cameras
Photography of Nature related to Cloudscapes
- This comprises of photos of the sky or the clouds
- In the past, black and white photos of dark clouds and heavy skies were very famous
